Chertsey Meads

The Thames meanders through Chertsey Meads like it's got nowhere particular to be, and that's rather the point. This nature reserve sprawls across the floodplain just outside Addlestone, a proper wetland habitat where the river does what rivers have done here for centuries - overflow, settle, and create something genuinely wild in the middle of Surrey.

What you get is open water, reedbeds, and meadow. Birdwatchers come for the wintering wildfowl and summer warblers. Casual walkers appreciate it because the paths are straightforward and the air feels genuinely different from the surrounding towns - damper, quieter, full of the kind of sounds you've forgotten about. It's the sort of place where twenty minutes feels restorative, though you could easily spend an hour if you've got binoculars and patience.

Spring and autumn are when the reserve really earns its reputation, but even in winter there's activity worth watching. Summer can feel a bit overgrown if you're hoping for open vistas. Most of it appears to be free access, which is excellent value.
