Chilbolton Cow Common SSSI

The common sits just outside Stockbridge, Hampshire, and it's one of those places that reveals itself slowly. First time I walked it, I expected manicured paths and information boards. Instead, you get something altogether wilder - open grassland where cattle actually graze, chalk meadow that shifts colour with the seasons, and the kind of quiet you only find when you're not on a main road.

It's designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which translates to: botanists get properly excited here. The wildflowers in late spring and early summer are genuinely worth planning around - orchids, cowslips, the lot. The paths are straightforward enough, though the ground can be boggy after rain, so wellington boots aren't a bad shout.

Walkers will find it more rewarding than families with young children. There's no café, no facilities to speak of, and toddlers might struggle with the uneven terrain. But if you're staying at Stockbridge View or doing a longer walking weekend in the area, this makes a proper morning's excursion. Allow a couple of hours to actually look around rather than just march through.

The real appeal is the untouched feel of it. No one's trying to make it "attractive" or "accessible" in the modern sense. It exists for the wildlife and the people who appreciate that. On a clear day with good light, you'll see why it matters.
