Most visitors to Snowdonia charge straight up Snowdon itself, but this lesser-known peak offers something rather special - proper Welsh mountain walking without the crowds. Standing at 413 metres, Clogwynygarreg delivers sweeping views across the Menai Strait towards Anglesey, with the dramatic backdrop of Snowdon's eastern flanks filling the horizon behind you.

The ascent from Caernarfon side takes about two hours of steady walking through typical Welsh hill country - bracken-covered slopes, dry stone walls, and the odd sheep giving you suspicious looks. It's not technically demanding, but you'll need decent boots and waterproofs because the weather can turn quickly up here.

Families with older children who enjoy a proper walk will find this much more manageable than tackling Snowdon, though toddlers won't thank you for it. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and offers a fine spot for lunch if the wind's not too fierce.

From holiday parks around Llanberis like Bryn Dinas Camping Pods or Cae Du Campsite, it's easily reached as a morning expedition, leaving afternoons free for the tourist trail attractions. Those staying nearer Beddgelert Campsite might combine it with exploring the Aberglaslyn Pass. Allow four hours return from most starting points, and check the forecast - clouds can roll in fast and spoil those coastal views completely.
