Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park

The park covers 1,640 acres across the Clyde Valley and Renfrewshire hills, with waymarked trails ranging from easy flat loops around Barr Loch to proper hill walks that'll test your legs. The views from higher ground stretch west towards the Firth of Clyde on a clear day, which isn't every day up here, but when it happens, it's worth the weather you endured to get there.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts will spend a full day here without breaking a sweat - well, you'll break a sweat, but you'll enjoy it. Birdwatchers come specifically for the lochs; you'll spot curlews, redshank, and if you're lucky, ospreys. Families with older kids do well on the shorter circuits, though pushchair access is limited to specific paths. The visitor centre at Castle Semple has facilities and can point you toward trails matching your fitness level.

Admission is free, which is one reason locals guard this place carefully. Allow half a day minimum, a full day if you want to do anything worthwhile. The pods at Auchenhean are only three miles away - a proper base for exploring the park properly without the driving each morning. Spring brings birdlife; autumn offers moody light and fewer midges. Winter's honest and quiet, which some people prefer.
