Kenmure Hill Temple

Climbing up to Kenmure Hill Temple outside Lochwinnoch takes a good twenty minutes on foot, and it's one of those walks where you earn the view proper. The temple itself is a Victorian folly - a modest stone structure perched on the hillside that looks grander in photographs than it actually is, if we're being honest. You get panoramic views across the Clyde Valley once you're up there, rolling farmland stretching out in every direction, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth the leg work.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination you'd spend hours at - thirty minutes browsing the views and poking around the temple itself and you're done - but it fits well into a longer circuit around the area. The surrounding countryside is proper walking country, and Lochwinnoch village itself has a decent café or two if you need to refuel afterwards.

If you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean nearby, this makes for a decent afternoon outing, though it's hardly essential. The climb is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might grumble about the trudge. Free to visit, obviously - it's just sitting there on the hillside.

The temple's Victorian charm is a bit faded these days, and the structure's nothing you couldn't walk past without much fanfare. But the walk itself, and that moment when you crest the hill and the view opens up? That's the real payoff here.
