Garnock Spout Waterfall

The walk to Garnock Spout takes you through woodland that gets properly atmospheric the closer you get to the water. It's not a massive cascade - nothing like the dramatic Highland falls you might be picturing - but there's something satisfying about finding it tucked away near Lochwinnoch. The waterfall drops into a small pool surrounded by moss-covered rocks, the kind of spot where the sound of falling water actually makes you stop talking.

You'll need decent boots or at least shoes with grip. The path can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain, which is most of the time in Renfrewshire. Allow a couple of hours for the walk and a proper look around - it's not something you rush. The stream before the falls is nice enough for paddling if you've got kids in tow, though they might lose interest after twenty minutes.

This works well as a half-day outing if you're based at The Pods at Auchenhean nearby. It's the kind of walk that appeals to people who actually enjoy being outdoors rather than ticking boxes - nature photographers will find decent light filtering through the trees in the morning. Don't expect anything grand or Instagram-famous; that's rather the point. Go when the weather's been wet so there's proper water flow, and aim for weekday mornings to avoid the weekend crowd.
