Cobbs Hill

Cobbs Hill sits just outside Canterbury, and on a clear day the views across Kent are genuinely worth the short drive from the city. It's nothing dramatic - we're talking about 200-odd metres rather than Alpine peaks - but that's precisely why it works so well as a leg-stretch during a caravan holiday at one of the nearby sites like Hawthorne Trench or Black Horse Farm.

The hill itself is open downland, the kind of place where you can actually see what you're walking across rather than being hemmed in by trees. There's something properly satisfying about reaching the top without breaking a sweat, especially if you've got restless kids who need to burn off energy. The surrounding countryside rolls away nicely, and on those rare bright afternoons you'll spot the Weald properly. Walkers will find it a straightforward ramble, nothing technical, and it connects reasonably to the wider footpath network if you fancy extending things.

This isn't somewhere to plan your entire holiday around, but it's excellent as a quick diversion while exploring the Canterbury area. Port Lympne Safari Park is only four miles away if you're mixing outdoor walks with something more activity-focused. Allow an hour for the walk and views, perhaps ninety minutes if you're the sort who stops to identify birds. Free to access, no visitor facilities to speak of, so bring water. Best visited outside school holidays when the footpaths are less crowded.
