Cockroost Hill

The climb up Cockroost Hill is short, sharp, and over before you know it. From Henfield, you're looking at a decent pull up onto the South Downs proper - nothing epic, but enough to make you breathe a bit if you're not used to it. The payoff is a proper view across the weald, the kind that reminds you why people bother with hills in the first place. On a clear day you can see a fair distance; on a grey one, well, at least you've had the exercise.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with young kids might struggle with the gradient, though nothing here demands serious gear or navigation skills. It's more of a brisk leg-stretch than a expedition. The walk itself forms part of the broader Downs landscape that dominates this corner of Sussex - you'll pass through fields and chalk grassland that hasn't changed much in decades.

Timing-wise, allow an hour for the ascent and back if you're going at a steady pace, less if you're fit. Free to access, naturally - it's open country. Worth doing if you're camped at Foot of the Downs or Downsview Park nearby, both within a couple of miles. It pairs well with exploring the higher stretches of the Downs themselves. Don't expect facilities at the summit - bring water. Go early if the forecast looks decent; afternoons up here can get misty and you'll lose the view entirely.
