Coed Pendugwm Nature Reserve

Coed Pendugwm is a proper woodland reserve just outside Welshpool - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working nature reserve, not a tourist attraction with visitor centres and gift shops, which means it stays quiet even when the weather's decent.

The woodland itself is mixed deciduous forest, managed to encourage wildlife. You'll find walking trails winding through the trees, and if you're into birds and insects, this is where you'll spend your time with binoculars rather than your phone. The reserve isn't massive - you can walk it in an hour or so - but that's rather the point. It's the kind of place you visit because you want to slow down, not because you've ticked it off a list.

Walkers and nature watchers will get the most from it. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited unless they're already keen on spotting wildlife. The trails are accessible enough, but there's not much in the way of facilities, so bring what you need.

Since the reserve is free and just a couple of miles from several glamping sites - Cae Nant and Fir View Tan Y Ffridd are both close - it works well as a morning walk from your base. Combine it with other Mid Wales woodland walks rather than making a day of it solo. Spring and early summer are best for birdlife; autumn's decent for atmosphere. Worth an hour if you're in the area, but don't rearrange your trip around it.
