Bryn Rhosfawr

The walk up Bryn Rhosfawr from Welshpool is proper rewarding - a modest hill by Welsh standards, but the kind of walk that doesn't demand a full day yet pays proper dividends. The climb takes you through farmland and moorland with views that open up gradually rather than all at once, which somehow feels more earned.

From the summit, you get a decent panorama across mid-Wales and towards the Brecons on a clear day. The surrounding landscape is rolling rather than dramatic, which means it works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading back to your accommodation for lunch. Families with kids who aren't quite ready for the big mountains will find this approachable - it's steep enough to feel like a proper walk, but short enough that legs don't give up halfway.

Historically, this area is thick with old Wales - the town of Welshpool itself has plenty of character if you need context before or after. The holiday parks nearby, from Fir View Tan Y Ffridd right through to The Secret Yurts a few miles out, make sensible bases for a few days exploring this quieter corner of Powys. You're close enough to Welshpool for supplies and a decent pub, but far enough out to feel genuinely away from it all.

Go in autumn or spring when the light's better and the moorland isn't waterlogged. Summer can get a bit muddy if there's been rain. Free to walk, obviously - just park sensibly near the trailhead and respect the farmland around you.
