Coed y Borthol

The woodland here rolls across hillside above Llanrwst, all dark conifers and older broadleaves mixed in with rhododendrons that flower pink and purple come late spring. Walking trails wind through - some steep enough to get your heart going, others gentle enough for families with younger children who don't tire easily.

It's the sort of place you stumble through rather than linger. There's something about Welsh forests - they feel ancient and a bit wild, even when they're managed. The views drop away towards the Conwy Valley if you pick the right path, and on a clear day you catch sight of the surrounding ridges. An hour here suits most people fine, maybe ninety minutes if you're the sort who stops to photograph everything.

Coed y Borthol works well as a half-morning jaunt if you're staying at either Maenan Abbey or Waenfechan down the valley. Both caravan parks are close enough that you're not burning petrol for the sake of a walk. The forest doesn't demand much planning - turn up when you fancy it, decent boots help on the muddier stretches, and you won't need anything else.

Historically woodland types might find the mix of commercial forestry alongside native trees interesting, but there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards. This is a proper walk in the woods, not a heritage experience. If you want something more structured, Conwy Castle sits just across town. But if you're after quiet forest air and a bit of leg-stretching between caravan park meals, this delivers.
