Coed y Brenin Forest Park

The moment you drive into Coed y Brenin, the forest closes around you properly - dense Welsh woodland that feels genuinely remote despite being less than ten minutes from Dolgellau. This isn't a manicured park with visitor centres and ice cream vans. It's working forestry, with red gravel trails that cut through spruce and fir, and the whole place set up for people who actually want to move about rather than just gawk at a view.

There are trails here for all levels. Walkers will find themselves following the Afon Maesgwm up steep valleys, crossing streams on rickety bridges that feel appropriately sketchy. Mountain bikers treat it like a playground - the berms and jumps suggest someone takes this seriously. Families with younger kids can manage the easier loops without needing their GP to sign them off afterwards. Allow two hours minimum for anything worthwhile; half an hour and you'll have seen bugger all except car park gravel.

The real appeal is how raw it stays. No commercialisation, no queues. Just trails, trees, and the occasional glimpse of the valleys beyond. Midweek visits in autumn are genuinely excellent - fewer people, better light filtering through the canopy. Summer brings the crowds, but even then it's nothing like the tourist trap attractions around Snowdonia.

If you're camping at Coed y Brenin Forest Camp or the excellent Llwyn yr Helm just a few miles away, this becomes your backyard. Worth building a day around, but go for the walking and biking - don't expect facilities.
