Mynydd Glan-Llyn-y-Forwyn

The walk up Mynydd Glan-Llyn-y-Forwyn from Dolgellau isn't a casual stroll - it's a proper hill with teeth. You're looking at roughly 600 metres of climbing, which sorts out the casual walkers from those who've actually trained for it. The payoff, though, is absolutely worth the sweat. From the summit you get views across the Cader Idris range and down into the valleys that sandwich Dolgellau. On a clear day, the visibility is stunning.

This one's for serious hikers and peak baggers rather than families wanting a gentle afternoon out. The terrain is steep and exposed in places, so decent boots and a map are non-negotiable. Allow a solid four to five hours for the round trip depending on fitness. The peak itself is moorland - windswept, often boggy, utterly wild. It's the real deal.

Free to climb, no barriers, no visitor centre nonsense. Just you and the mountain. If you're based at Graig Wen Camping & Cottages nearby - which genuinely deserves its five-star rating - or Torrent Walk Campsite, this makes an excellent day out. The Rhaeadr Nantcol Waterfalls are worth a look on the way home if you still have legs. Best tackled in summer when the paths are driest and daylight is long. Winter ascents need proper experience. This is walkers' territory.
