Coed y Fedw

The forest around Machynlleth isn't what you'd call dramatic - it's green, quiet, and honestly a bit easy to overlook. Coed y Fedw sits just outside town and feels like proper local woodland, the sort of place where the main sound is rain on leaves rather than other visitors chatting. You get a decent walk through mixed trees, some clearings with views back towards the hills, and the kind of stillness that makes you remember why you came to Wales in the first place.

This is walker territory, no question. The forest has well-trodden paths and you can knock out a couple of hours without breaking a sweat, or stay for longer if you're after something meatier. It's free, open year-round, and works brilliantly as a break from sitting on a campsite. Families with young kids will get an hour of entertainment; older children and adults after a proper forest ramble will find it satisfying enough. Autumn's your best bet - the light comes through gold and the whole place feels less damp than it does most of the year.

If you're based at Gwerniago Campsite or Sunbeach Holiday Park, this is a no-brainer addition to your itinerary. Nothing fancy, nothing Instagram-worthy, just a genuine bit of North Wales woodland that does exactly what it says on the tin. Worth an afternoon, definitely not worth planning a trip around.
