Coed Y Strade - West

There's not much here, to be honest - just a lonely standing stone in the Welsh countryside between Burry Port and Llanelli. But that's rather the point. Coed Y Strade West is the kind of place you stumble upon while walking and think, right, someone put this here thousands of years ago, and it's still standing. The stone itself isn't massive, but it commands a proper sense of age in ways the tourist circuit doesn't.

Walkers get the most from this. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend more than ten minutes here - but as part of a longer ramble through the Carmarthenshire landscape, it adds genuine texture. The surrounding fields are genuinely quiet. No visitor centre, no interpretation board, no gift shop. Just the stone.

Free to visit, obviously. No gates, no opening hours. Early morning or late afternoon works best if you want the light right and the farm traffic minimal. Summer's pleasant enough, but winter walks here have a moody appeal that suits the archaeology.

If you're staying at Gwlad Glamping six miles away, this fits neatly into a morning circuit before settling in for the evening. Pair it with a proper walk along the coast at Burry Port itself, and you've got a decent half-day. Not the sort of thing that photographs well or makes for dinner party stories, but if you're into Bronze Age history or simply like walking and looking at old things in fields, it's worth the detour.
