Cognells Oaks

Cognells Oaks is a proper woodland walk through ancient oak trees just a few miles from Witney, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The forest isn't vast - you're looking at a few hours maximum for a decent ramble - but the canopy here is genuinely impressive. Gnarled old oaks dominate, their trunks thick enough that you wonder how old they actually are, and in autumn the light filtering through does something rather special to the leaf litter underfoot.

This suits walkers far more than it does families with small kids. There's no visitor centre, no tea shop, no playgrounds - just woodland paths that vary between muddy and very muddy depending on the season. Bring proper boots and expect to work for your views. It's close enough that you won't waste half your morning driving, but far enough from the holiday park that it feels genuinely separate from the caravan site experience.
