Coille a' Chàirn

The walk through Coille a' Chàirn starts gently enough, but these Highland woods have real character. You're looking at native Scots pine mixed with birch and rowan - proper ancient forest that feels genuinely remote despite being just a few miles from Ullapool. The trees crowd in thick on both sides, and on a still day the place goes properly quiet except for the occasional red squirrel or wood pigeon crashing through the canopy.

It's the sort of forest that rewards slow walking rather than rapid ticking-off. There are decent tracks through here, but nothing manicured or obvious - bring decent boots and take your time spotting the lichen-covered stumps and the way the light filters through at different times of day. Kids will find it atmospheric without being scary, though younger ones might get restless after an hour or so if they're expecting a playground.

The big strength here is how it slots into a wider Highland trip. You're minutes from Ullapool itself, that proper fishing town with its waterfront and fish supper shops, and it pairs perfectly with a night or two at Port a' Bhaigh Campsite down the road. The site's well-reviewed and gives you access to both this forest and the broader Loch Broom area without needing a car constantly. Go when the weather's halfway decent - these woods in mist are atmospheric but also genuinely disorienting. Come for the peace, come for the birdsong, but don't expect Instagram moments.
