Colebatch Hill

The walk up Colebatch Hill rewards you with proper views across the Shropshire Hills and into Mid Wales - the kind of panorama that makes you understand why people settle in this corner of Powys. It's not a dramatic spike; more of a steady climb from Bishops Castle, working through mixed woodland before opening out onto moorland with heather and gorse. Allow a couple of hours for a round trip if you're taking it at a reasonable pace.

This is walker territory, plainly. The ascent isn't punishing, but it's real enough that you'll feel you've earned the vantage point at the top. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the moorland section a bit featureless. History buffs will appreciate the older paths and boundary markers dotted about, though Colebatch Hill itself doesn't come with the dramatic backstory you get at some peaks.

Bishops Castle sits at the base, a proper small market town that's worth poking around - good independent shops and cafes, nothing chain. If you're camping in the area, Woodbatch Camping & Glamping and Foxholes Campsite are both within easy reach, making this a sensible half-day excursion. The walk's free, naturally. Go early on a clear day if you want the views to stick with you. On grey mornings it feels rather exposed and windswept rather than dramatic.
