Roundton Hill National Nature Reserve

The walk up Roundton Hill itself is the whole point here. You're climbing moorland in the shadow of the Stiperstones, proper open country with views that stretch across Powys when the cloud lifts. It's a National Nature Reserve, which means the hill matters ecologically - heathland and grassland that's rare enough to protect - but honestly, most visitors just come for the ridge walk and the landscape.

Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushed. The terrain is straightforward rather than technical, but it's exposed and can be windy. There's real satisfaction in getting to the top, especially on a clear day when you can see right across to the Shropshire border. Bring proper kit; this isn't a casual stroll.

Walkers will get the most from this. If you're after botanical interest, the heathland itself is worth studying - the reserve manages it carefully - but if you're expecting facilities or interpretation boards, you'll be disappointed. It's properly wild in that low-key Welsh way.

Free to access, as with most open moorland. Based near Bishops Castle, you're well positioned for exploring the wider Border country. The nearby caravan parks - Mellington Hall, Sunrise Pods, and Camlad Valley are all within a few miles - work well as bases. Combine Roundton with walks on Stiperstones or rambles around the old market town if the weather turns sketchy. Not dramatic, but genuinely good Welsh hill walking.
