College Lake Nature Reserve

The shallow lagoons at College Lake pull in serious birdwatchers from across the region, and for good reason. This working nature reserve near Tring is all about wetland habitats - reed beds, open water, and scrubland that attract everything from winter visiting whooper swans to summer breeding warblers. You walk the perimeter on well-maintained paths, stopping at hides positioned along the water's edge where you actually stand a decent chance of spotting something worth the trip.

It's free to visit, which helps. Opening hours are 9:30 to 17:00, and you should allow at least two hours if you're doing this properly with binoculars. Serious ornithologists will spend half a day here, but casual walkers can manage the circuit in 90 minutes. Spring and autumn are peak migration periods - genuinely brilliant if you know what you're looking at. Winter brings the bigger birds. Summer feels a bit quiet by comparison, though breeding season activity is there if you're patient.

Kids get restless unless they're already into birds. The hides are good for spotting, but there's not much else to grab their attention. This works best paired with camping at one of the nearby spots - Chiltern Yurts is barely a mile away, making it easy to base yourself out here and explore the wider Tring area. The reserve runs on a volunteer model through the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust, so there's proper conservation work happening alongside your visit.
