Pitstone Green Museum

You'll find Pitstone Green Museum just outside Tring, housed in a Victorian schoolhouse that's seen better days - but that's rather the point. It's a proper local history setup, the kind of place run by enthusiasts who've spent years collecting bits and pieces from the village and surrounding Buckinghamshire countryside.

Inside, it's a jumble of schoolroom furniture, agricultural tools, photographs, and domestic objects that tell you how people actually lived here a century or more ago. Nothing's been polished to death or locked behind glass. You can see the old desks where village children sat, farming implements that shaped the landscape, and enough evidence of rural life to give you a real feel for what the Chilterns were like before commuter culture took over.

It's best suited to local history buffs and families with older kids who can read the displays and understand context. Younger children will find it quiet and a bit slow - thirty minutes is about right unless you're genuinely fascinated by Victorian education or agricultural history.

If you're camping at Chiltern Yurts or Hill Farm And Orchard, both within a few miles, this makes a decent rainy-day visit. It won't take long, it's free (assuming that hasn't changed), and you'll come away understanding the area rather better. Worth an hour if you're staying nearby, less worth a special trip from Tring itself.
