College Wood

The woodland at College Wood near Tenterden is proper Sussex - dense, quiet, and the sort of place where you'll actually hear yourself think. Ancient oak and beech dominate, with a floor of bluebells in spring that genuinely stops you in your tracks. Walking here feels less like a nature reserve visit and more like stumbling into someone's well-maintained back garden, except that someone is very old and very good at their job.

It's ideal for anyone who wants to stretch their legs without the crowds. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after 20 minutes - there's no playground, no water features, just trees and paths. But serious walkers and photographers will spend hours here, especially during golden hour when the light filters through the canopy. The terrain is manageable, though it can get boggy in winter.

You can walk straight in with no hassle, though do check locally for any seasonal closures. Allow 1-2 hours depending on which routes you take. The whole vibe changes between seasons - winter reveals the structure of the woodland, autumn is predictably stunning, and spring brings that bluebell explosion.
