Colquhoun Square

The square itself is actually a wetland nature reserve - a bit of a misnomer if you're expecting Victorian architecture. Located just outside Craigendoran on the Rosneath Peninsula, it's a genuinely quiet spot where you can watch wildfowl and wading birds without fighting crowds.

What you get here is a proper working habitat rather than a manicured attraction. The paths wind through marshy ground, and depending on the season, you'll spot teal, shoveler, and if you're lucky, the occasional osprey. The views across the water add something too - on a clear day, it reaches toward Ben Lomond. Allow an hour or so for a decent circuit, though birdwatchers often stay longer with binoculars in hand.

It's free to access and works well if you're staying at Rosneath Castle Caravan Park - barely a mile away - or exploring the wider Rosneath Peninsula. The main appeal is for nature enthusiasts and keen photographers rather than families after an afternoon's entertainment. Kids might find the bog slightly interesting, but there's no visitor centre, cafe, or facilities, so come prepared.

Best visited early morning when birds are most active, and spring through autumn gives you the fullest range of species. Winter can be rewarding too if you don't mind the damp. It's the kind of place that rewards patience - sit quietly on a bench and you'll see more than if you're rushing through. Well worth including in a walking holiday of the area.
