Hermitage Park

The woodland paths through Hermitage Park wind down towards Gareloch, and on a decent day the light filters through the trees in that particular Scottish way that makes you forget you're only twenty minutes from Craigendoran. It's a proper nature reserve, the kind where you're more likely to spot a red squirrel than a gift shop, and that's exactly the point.

The reserve spreads across mixed woodland - oak, birch, and conifer - with tracks that range from gentle riverside strolls to proper hill walks if you fancy it. Most visitors spend between one and two hours here, wandering the marked paths without feeling rushed or crowded. Birdwatchers do well, especially in spring and early summer. Family groups with younger children will find the easier loops manageable, though buggies would struggle on some stretches.

Access is free, which is refreshing. There's basic parking near Craigendoran, though it's not huge, so go early if the weather's turned decent. Winter here is quieter but damp - bring waterproofs whatever the season.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Loch Lomond Retreat gets solid reviews and sits about five miles south - Hermitage works well as a morning outing before heading to the water itself. It won't eat up your whole day, but it fills a gap nicely between touring and sitting put. The reserve is quieter than the busier Loch Lomond spots, which matters if you're after a bit of peace rather than scenery that's been photographed to death.
