The Hill House (National Trust for Scotland)

Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hill House sits just outside Craigendoran, a white harled masterpiece that looks like nothing else you'll see on the Clyde coast. It's a private residence turned museum, and stepping inside feels a bit like entering a time capsule - every room, every piece of furniture, every light fitting was designed by Mackintosh himself between 1902 and 1904.

The man was obsessive about detail, which means the house rewards slow looking. You'll spot his fingerprints everywhere: the distinctive high-backed chairs, geometric patterns in the plasterwork, windows that frame views like paintings. It's not a grand country pile - quite the opposite. It's intimate and deliberate, which is precisely why it matters.

You need a couple of hours minimum, ideally three if you want to absorb it properly. Art and design enthusiasts will be gripped; families with young children might find it a bit static. The National Trust for Scotland runs it now, so expect proper interpretation and a small shop.
