Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park

The drive up to Compton Verney catches you off guard. You're winding through proper Warwickshire countryside near Shipston-on-Stour when suddenly there's this grand Georgian house sitting in 40 acres of landscaped grounds - all sweeping lawns and mature trees that look like they've been there since the house went up in the 1710s. It's an art gallery now, which means you get a decent contemporary art collection inside without the usual museum stuffiness.

The house itself is the real draw though. Walking through rooms with high ceilings and period details while looking at modern installations feels right somehow - the contrast works. Outside, the park is genuinely lovely for a wander. The grounds were designed by Capability Brown, and you can tell. Bring a picnic and settle on the lawn for an hour if the weather's decent. No sense rushing.

It works best for adults and older teenagers who actually want to engage with art. Young kids might get restless indoors, though the grounds alone are worth the trip if you're camping nearby. The walk around the estate takes a solid two hours if you're not hurrying.

You're well positioned if you're staying at any of the caravan sites within a few miles - Twitey's Camping and Glamping or Shire Camping are reasonably close. Check ahead for opening times and admission charges, as these can shift. Worth building into a weekend exploring the Cotswolds fringe rather than treating as a standalone trip.
