Coombe Abbey Country Park

The ruins of Coombe Abbey rise out of the Warwickshire countryside like something from a Gothic novel, though what actually greets you is more serene than spooky. This 12th-century Cistercian monastery sits within a proper country park - all lakes, woodland walks, and open grassland that sprawls across 500 acres just outside Rugby. The abbey itself is a roofless shell now, but the sheer scale of the stonework tells you this was once serious business. You can wander right up to it, peer through the arches, and imagine the monks going about their day.

It's brilliant for walkers. The park has marked trails threading through trees and around the water, with the ruins serving as your ultimate destination rather than a quick tick-box. Families will find it manageable - kids can burn energy on the open spaces, and there's enough history to keep older ones interested without needing lengthy explanations. The setting is genuinely lovely, especially if you time it right and avoid the school holidays crush.
