Cop Hill Plantation

The woodland around Cop Hill Plantation is proper Norfolk - dense, quiet, and easy to miss if you're not paying attention. There's no visitor centre or marked trails here, which means you get the real thing: a place that feels like it belongs to the locals rather than the tourist board.

It's a working forest, so what you're walking through is commercial forestry mixed with older established woodland. The paths are decent enough, though muddy after rain - bring proper boots. The main appeal is the sheer peace of it. No cafe, no gift shop, just trees and the sound of whatever wildlife decides to show itself. Walkers will find this rewarding, especially those who like their countryside a touch wild around the edges.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper walk, less if you just fancy a quick ramble. There's no cost to access it, which is refreshing. Spring's lovely when the forest floor comes alive, though autumn's probably the most atmospheric.

Holt's only a few miles away, so you could easily combine this with a village wander or lunch. It works well alongside a stay at Kelling Heath Holiday Park - that's nearby enough to make it a natural half-day excursion. The forest doesn't demand a whole day, mind you. It's the kind of place you visit when the weather's decent and you want some air without the crowds.
