Copa Hill

The walk up Copa Hill from Aberystwyth is steep, proper steep, and the path isn't exactly well-maintained. You're scrambling over loose scree and boggy ground for a good portion of it, which means you need proper boots and shouldn't attempt this in wet weather unless you fancy a slippery ordeal.

Once you're up though - and it takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on fitness - the views across Cardigan Bay are genuinely worth the effort. You can see Aberystwyth spread out below, the curve of the coastline, and on clear days the Snowdonia peaks in the distance. The summit itself is fairly barren, just moorland and wind, which some find atmospheric and others find a bit bleak.

This is a walk for people who like getting their legs working, not a gentle stroll. Families with younger kids might find the steep sections frustrating, though teenagers who are up for a challenge will enjoy it. History buffs should know the hill has Bronze Age connections, though there's nothing visually dramatic to see - you're coming for the walk and the view, not archaeological features.

It's free, takes a morning or afternoon depending on pace, and works well as part of a broader Aberystwyth trip if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Woodlands or Glangwy Farm. Don't go expecting a manicured trail experience - this is raw, windswept Welsh moorland, and you'll either love that or wish you'd picked an easier option.
