University students spill from seafront pubs as Atlantic waves crash against the Victorian promenade below. This Welsh seaside town has proper character - part scholarly enclave, part windswept resort that's seen better days but refuses to give up.

Aberystwyth's Constitution Hill rises sharply behind the town centre, offering cracking views across Cardigan Bay. The cliff railway still hauls visitors to the summit, though the walk up rewards you with the same panorama for nothing. Down at sea level, the pier stretches into choppy waters where dog walkers brave the salt spray year-round.

Venture inland and the landscape transforms completely. Devil's Bridge draws the crowds for good reason - three bridges stacked on top of each other span a dramatic gorge where the River Mynach plunges into Devil's Cauldron below. It's a bit of a trek from town, but the Devil's Bridge Viewpoint delivers on its promise.

For those after proper hill walking, peaks like Pen y Garn and Copa Hill offer escape from the coastal bustle. The ruins of Hafod Mansion lie scattered through ancient woodlands, where Romantic poets once wandered in search of inspiration.

Reaching Aberystwyth means following the A487 along Wales's spectacular west coast, or catching one of the regular trains from Birmingham via the scenic Heart of Wales line. The town sits roughly halfway between Machynlleth to the north and Cardigan to the south.
