Cowden beach

The Humber estuary isn't everyone's idea of a seaside escape, but Cowden Beach delivers something genuinely different. You're looking at a working waterfront that's far removed from the bucket-and-spade crowds - mudflats, shingle banks, and industrial heritage all mixing together where the Humber meets the North Sea. It's blunt, honest landscape, the kind of place that photographs well in grey light and feels properly Yorkshire.

Walkers get the most from this stretch. The foreshore gives you access to real tidal zone habitat, and birdwatchers find it worthwhile, especially in winter months when migrant species swing through. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming - there's no cafés, no arcades, nowhere to shelter if the weather turns. But if your lot are into natural history or mudlarking, they'll find plenty to investigate in the debris.

It's essentially free access, no formal opening hours to worry about. Allow an hour or so for a proper walk, though you'll need to check the tide tables before you head down - the Humber shifts quickly. The beach works best as part of a wider exploration of the estuary rather than a destination in itself.

Staying at Cowden Holiday Park puts you right on your doorstep, though Sea View Country Park and Burton Constable Holiday Park both offer decent bases within a couple of miles if you want more facilities. Hull itself is only about ten miles inland if you need proper amenities or want to break up your visit with museums and restaurants.
