Mill Hill

Hull doesn't exactly shout about its high points, and Mill Hill is the reason why. It's the city's modest bump at around 40 metres, hardly the sort of elevation that'll leave you breathless, but on a clear day it does offer a proper view across Hull and towards the Humber. You won't need walking boots or a packed lunch - it's more of a quick detour than a destination.

The summit itself is straightforward: a small open space where you can see the city sprawl and, if the weather plays ball, glimpses towards the estuary. It's the sort of place where locals jog past or parents bring kids for five minutes of open air between errands. Real walking types will find it underwhelming after a quarter hour, but for anyone staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Cowden Holiday Park or Sea View Country Park are within spitting distance - it's a handy bit of fresh air without the faff of driving anywhere.

Go for the fact of it rather than the views. There's something daft and British about bothering with a peak that barely qualifies, and that's rather the point. Winter mornings are clearer than summer afternoons, so pick your weather. Free to visit, no facilities, no fiddling about. Allow twenty minutes maximum, less if you're just ticking it off. If you're camped nearby and fancy a leg-stretch away from the park, it'll do the job. Otherwise, treat it as a curiosity rather than a reason to visit Hull.
