Cowran Woods

The woods themselves are proper woodland - mixed broadleaf and conifer, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's walking territory, nothing fancy, just decent tracks that wind through decent-sized trees. The canopy blocks out enough light that even on a scorcher of a day, you're not melting. Local around Armathwaite, so you're talking a short drive from anywhere in the Eden Valley.

Walkers will get the most from it. This isn't a destination in itself - it's filler on a walking holiday, a couple of hours to stretch your legs if the weather's turned or you can't face a proper fell walk. There are no facilities I can speak of, so bring water and snacks. No crowds either, which is the real draw if you've come north to escape the Lake District honey-pot spots.

The time to visit is April through October. Winter makes the ground boggy and visibility dips. Spring's when the woodland floor gets interesting - bluebells, wild garlic, that sort of thing.

Staying locally? Englethwaite Hall is the obvious bet, just under five miles away and rated highly by caravanners. Eden Valley Glamping's equally close if you want something slightly more dressed-up. Drybeck Farm's a touch further but still reasonable. You'd do Cowran Woods as a morning wander, then head to one of the proper attractions - the Eden Valley has plenty - for an afternoon. Worth the detour? Only if you're already in the area. Don't travel specifically for it.
