Whinhill Wood

The woodland around Whinhill rises steeply from the Armathwaite area, offering proper walking country for anyone staying at the nearby caravan sites. It's not a manicured attraction with visitor facilities - it's genuinely just a chunk of working forest where you can stretch your legs without crowds. The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent views over the Eden Valley when you reach higher ground. Most people spend an hour to ninety minutes here, picking routes depending on fitness and mood.

This works brilliantly if you're based at Englethwaite Hall or Eden Valley Glamping and fancy a break from caravan life without driving anywhere. The terrain suits confident walkers more than families with toddlers - it can get muddy and steep in sections. Children who like clambering through trees and spotting woodland wildlife will find it engaging enough, though it's not the sort of place to keep restless kids entertained for hours.

Timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon gives you better light filtering through the trees, and weekday visits mean fewer dog walkers clogging the main paths. Spring's decent for bluebells, autumn for the colours. Winter can be boggy.

No facilities to speak of, so take water and snacks. The nearest proper village is Armathwaite itself, a couple of miles back towards the main roads. It's the sort of walk you do because you're in the area, not because you'd plan a day trip specifically for it - but that doesn't make it any less worthwhile if you're after quiet forest walking within reach of your pitch.
