Cranshaw Thorn Hill

Standing at 299 metres, this modest peak offers surprisingly good views across the Aire Valley without the crowds that plague more famous Yorkshire hills. The climb from the nearest car parking spot takes about 45 minutes through farmland and rough moorland - it's not particularly challenging, but you'll need proper walking boots as it gets boggy after rain.

Walkers looking for a half-day adventure will find this fits the bill perfectly. The summit itself is unmarked and frankly a bit anticlimactic, but the panorama stretching towards Shipley and beyond makes up for it. On clear days you can spot the distinctive cooling towers of power stations dotting the distant landscape.

Families with teenagers might enjoy the trek, though younger children will likely find it dull - there's nothing particularly exciting en route and the payoff is just views. Serious hikers can easily combine this with other nearby peaks for a longer circuit.

Expected duration is two to three hours return, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The area around Shipley has several holiday parks including Olicana Park and Moor Valley Country Park within easy reach, making this a decent addition to a Yorkshire Dales-adjacent break. Just don't expect Instagram-worthy drama - this is Yorkshire at its most understated.
