The Bingley Five Rise Locks remain the star attraction - Britain's steepest canal staircase and quite the sight when narrowboats navigate the 60-foot drop.

Rombald's Moor stretches endlessly above the town, a proper wilderness of heather and bracken that feels miles from anywhere despite being a short walk from the high street. Multiple peaks dot the landscape - Cabin Hill, Drake Hill, and Spy Hill among them - offering cracking views across the Aire Valley on clear days. Worth noting that Wicking Crag provides one of the best vantage points without too much of a slog.

Shipley itself keeps things real. No tourist tat here - just a working town with decent pubs and the kind of corner shops that still know your name. The old mill buildings tell their own stories, while Horncliff House adds a touch of grandeur to the mix. For something different, Puddle Stone gallery showcases local artists in what used to be industrial space.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Bradford's just down the road, Leeds is a quick train ride away, and the M65 brings you close enough. The surrounding countryside rewards proper exploration - those moorland peaks don't climb themselves, and the canal towpath makes for gentle walking when your legs need a rest.
