Cressing Temple Barns

Two enormous medieval barns stand in the flat Essex countryside near Maldon, their timber frames impossibly intact after 800 years. Cressing Temple Barns are what's left of a Knights Templar estate, and walking around them you get a proper sense of medieval construction - the way those massive beams slot together, the sheer scale of the spaces inside. There's no fancy interpretation or roped-off bits; you can actually get close and crane your neck up at the roof timbers.

Historically minded visitors will find this genuinely interesting. The barns date from the 12th and 13th centuries and once served a working farm feeding the Templar knights. For families, it's a bit of a mixed bag - kids might find it atmospheric for ten minutes, then get restless unless you're really into medieval architecture. Walkers passing through the area could easily slot this into a longer ramble across the Essex farmland.

Access appears to be free, though you'll want to check locally before making a special trip as opening arrangements aren't always consistent. Allow 30 minutes unless you're seriously into timber framing, in which case you could spend longer photographing details.

Stocks Farm Camping sits just four and a half miles away, making this a reasonable half-hour drive if you're based there for a longer holiday. The barns work best as part of a broader exploration of Maldon and the surrounding countryside rather than as a destination in themselves.
