Crookrise Crag Top

The walk up to Crookrise Crag Top rewards you with views that stretch across the Dales proper. From Skipton, you're looking at a decent pull uphill, but nothing that'll have you cursing the decision by the halfway point. The crag itself isn't some dramatic limestone cliff - it's more of a rocky outcrop that tops out at a reasonable height, giving you sight lines across moorland and valley in multiple directions. On a clear day you can clock a fair bit of Yorkshire unfurling below. The walk itself is straightforward fell terrain, boots recommended but nothing technical. Most people will manage it in under two hours each way, depending on pace and how long you faff about at the summit.

This one's suited to walkers with a bit of fitness rather than casual strollers. Kids who enjoy proper hikes will get something from it, but expect complaints from the "are we there yet" brigade if they're under eight. The views are the whole point here - there's no cafe, no heritage centre, no facilities at the top. Just you, the wind, and the landscape.

If you're staying at one of the local campsites - Coxons Farm Glamping Pods or Bolton Abbey Estate are both close by - Crookrise makes a solid half-day excursion that gets you out of the car without eating your whole afternoon. Go early if weather looks dicey; the summit clears quickly when clouds roll in, and you'll want to see what you've come for.
