Cross Holts

The woodland at Cross Holts feels properly different from the usual Nottinghamshire countryside. You're walking through mature mixed forest - oak, beech, conifer - with the kind of floor that's soft underfoot even weeks after rain. It's the sort of place that makes you understand why people bother with woodland walks instead of just doing a loop around Lincoln.

The trees are old enough to give real cover, which means it stays cool even on warm days. Paths wind through without feeling manicured or corporate. You'll spot moss-covered stumps, fallen branches being reclaimed by fungus, the proper ecosystem stuff. Not dramatic scenery in the postcard sense, but genuinely restful to move through.

Walkers get the most from it - the paths meander enough to justify an hour or so, and it's close enough to Lincoln for a half-day outing. Kids might enjoy it for thirty minutes before asking why there aren't playgrounds, though it's fine if they're the type who like poking at logs and looking for insects.

It fits nicely into a broader park holiday with Four Seasons Country Park just under six miles away. That gives you the comfort of a proper base while you explore the quieter woodland side of the region. Bring decent boots - it can be boggy even when it doesn't look it - and go when it's not peak holiday season if you want the woods to yourself. No obvious facilities on site, so sort yourself out in Lincoln beforehand.
