Hartsholme Lake

The lake itself is the main draw here - a proper body of water just outside Lincoln where you can actually spend an afternoon without feeling like you've driven halfway across the county. It's the centerpiece of Hartsholme Country Park, so you get water, woodland paths, and enough open space to stretch your legs properly.

Walkers will find it decent enough. The circuit around the lake takes a solid hour if you're not dawdling, though you can knock it back to 40 minutes if you're after efficiency. Families with younger kids tend to do well here - there's space to run about, water to watch for ducks and the occasional heron, and it doesn't require military-level planning to visit. Bird enthusiasts should bring binoculars; the lake attracts a reasonable variety depending on the season.

It's free, which is the right price for what amounts to a local nature spot rather than a destination attraction. There's no entrance charge and no faffing about with parking fees. The park has proper facilities nearby, including the Hartsholme Country Park campsite just across the way if you're staying in the area.

Worth fitting in if you're based at one of the holiday parks - South Cliff or Lakeside Touring Caravan Park are both within striking distance - but don't expect fireworks. It's the sort of place you visit because it's there and you need some air and movement, not because it's going to blow your mind. On a clear day with decent light, it's genuinely pleasant.
