Cross Rigg

Standing at 380 metres, this modest fell sits just west of Consett and offers a proper workout for anyone wanting to escape the former steel town's streets. The ascent through mixed woodland and across open moorland takes about an hour from the nearest parking spots, though you'll need to do your homework on access routes as there's no obvious trailhead signposted.

Views from the top sweep across the Durham Dales towards the Pennines - nothing spectacular, but satisfying enough after the climb. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and feels genuinely wild despite being so close to built-up areas. On clear days you can pick out the distinctive outline of Penshaw Monument to the east.

Walkers with a bit of experience will get the most from Cross Rigg. The terrain can be boggy in places and paths aren't always clear, so this isn't one for casual Sunday strollers or families with young children. Allow three hours for the full round trip including a breather at the top.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Consett like Village Green or Allensford, Cross Rigg makes for a decent half-day adventure when you fancy stretching your legs. Just don't expect Instagram-worthy panoramas - this is more about the satisfaction of a proper moorland walk than stunning scenery.
