Harehope Hill

Three hundred metres above sea level, this modest summit offers proper views across the North Pennines without requiring mountaineering skills. The walk up from the nearest road is straightforward enough for families with older children, though the final approach can get boggy after rain. Worth the effort though - on a clear day you'll see across to the Lake District fells in the west and the Yorkshire Dales to the south.

It's not dramatic enough to wow teenagers glued to their phones, but anyone who appreciates wide open countryside will enjoy the panoramic views from the top. The summit itself is marked by a modest cairn and offers a decent spot for a sandwich break.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from Consett, including time to take in the scenery.
