Crow Wood

The forest floor at Crow Wood is thick with needles and moss, deadening your footsteps as you push deeper into the trees. This Aberdeenshire woodland near Huntly is the sort of place you stumble into half by accident - no fanfare, no visitor centre, just proper forest doing what forests do best.

It's a working woodland with a mix of conifers and broadleaves, crisscrossed by decent walking paths that range from gentle loops to longer woodland rambles. The trees are tall enough here to make you feel genuinely away from things, even though you're never far from civilization. Spring brings bluebells in patches; autumn turns the light golden through the canopy. On wet days - and there are plenty of those in the Highlands - the whole place has a moody, atmospheric quality that photographs poorly but feels brilliant to walk through.

This works well for families who want a proper wood walk without needing to plan too much. Kids can burn energy on the trails, and there's enough space to loop back quickly if someone gets tired. Serious walkers might find it a bit limited for a full day, but it pairs nicely with other local attractions. If you're staying at Huntly Castle Holiday Park just down the road, a morning walk here before heading elsewhere makes sense.

There's no charge as far as I can tell, and no formal opening hours - you just turn up. Bring decent shoes; the paths can be boggy after rain.
