Cwm-oernant Reservoirs

Two reservoirs sitting high in the Carmarthenshire hills, with walking tracks that loop around the water and open moorland views that stretch for miles. It's the sort of place where you genuinely forget you're in South Wales - feels more Scottish than anything else, all heather and wind and sky.

The reservoirs themselves are industrial in origin but have softened into the landscape well enough. What matters is the walking. There are decent paths around both pools, nothing too technical, and the terrain changes depending which way you go - some muddy sections, some rocky. Most people manage the circuit in an hour or so, though there's no reason to rush. The water's often gun-metal grey, which sounds grim but actually looks proper dramatic when the light hits it right.

Walkers and hill types will get the most from this. Kids might find it a bit exposed and bleak unless they're the sort who enjoy being outdoors full stop. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Free to access, naturally.

It works well as a half-day option if you're based at one of the nearby parks around Carmarthen - Quarry Lodge Campsite and Lan Farm Glamping are within a few miles. Pair it with a proper walk elsewhere in the area and you've got a solid morning. The drive from Carmarthen takes about thirty minutes depending on which route you take. Go on a clear day if you can; mist here isn't atmospheric, it's just damp and frustrating.
