Daddy's Bush

A proper woodland walk east of Cambridge, Daddy's Bush is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - and that's exactly its charm. It's a working forest with actual paths through it, not some sanitised nature trail with interpretive boards every ten metres. You get ancient trees, dappled light, and the genuine sensation of being away from things even though you're minutes from the city.

The walk itself takes about an hour depending on how many times you stop to muck about, which means families with younger kids should allow a bit longer. It's manageable underfoot most of the year, though proper wellies aren't a waste after rain. There's something about old woodland that appeals to people who actually like trees rather than just Instagram snaps of them - the quiet does it, really.

If you're staying at Piggles Retreat or HappenOak Treehouse - both within three miles - this fills a morning nicely. You won't find shops or facilities here, so bring water and a snack. The nearest proper amenities are back in Cambridge. It works well as part of a broader park holiday in Cambridgeshire rather than a standalone day out, though keen walkers and nature types will find it genuinely restorative. Spring and autumn are best; summer can feel a bit muggy under the canopy.
