Dam Hill

The walk up Dam Hill from Richmond rewards you with proper Wensleydale views - moorland rolling away in every direction, and on a clear day you can pick out Pendragon Castle off to the east. It's not a monster climb; most people knock it out in under an hour from the town, making it ideal for a half-morning sortie if you're camped at Usha Gap Farm or one of the other sites nearby.

What you're looking at is moorland rather than mountain drama, so don't expect Alpine views or scrambling. The path is straightforward, though it can be muddy after rain. Walkers who like to bag peaks will appreciate the simplicity of it, and families with older kids find it manageable without being tedious. Younger children might find it a bit samey - there's no dramatic summit feature or shelter, just the high point and the scenery.

Richmond itself sits below, and you get a proper sense of scale once you're up there. The Wensleydale landscape is working country - you'll see sheep, dry stone walls, the occasional farmhouse - which adds character if you're interested in how these valleys function.

Go on a dry day. There's no admission charge or facilities at the summit, so bring water. If you're based at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club or Cherish Glamping, you're only five miles away, making this a decent secondary outing if you've already tackled longer walks elsewhere in the Dale. Autumn and spring tend to be clearest.
