Little Shunner Fell

The walk up Little Shunner Fell from near Richmond feels properly steep at first, then rewards you with views across Wensleydale that justify the effort. It's not a particularly high peak - around 2,000 feet - but what it lacks in dramatic altitude it makes up for in the breadth of the view once you're up there. On a clear day you can see right across the dale, with Pen-y-ghent and Whernside sitting on the horizon like bookends.

Families with older kids and regular walkers will get the most from this one. Younger children might struggle with the gradient, and the descent can be tough on the knees. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top - just you, the wind, and a proper fell experience. Go midweek if you can; weekends get busy with people tackling the Three Peaks.

If you're based at Usha Gap Farm & Campsite or Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - both excellent bases in the area - Little Shunner Fell works well as a morning mission before exploring the quieter bits of the dale. The nearest proper facilities are in Richmond, though Hawes is closer for post-walk food. It's free to walk, naturally, and best tackled in decent weather; low cloud makes the whole thing feel rather pointless.
