Dead Edge End

The walk up to Dead Edge End rewards you with proper views across the Pennine moorland - the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people spend weekends out here. It's a modest peak by any standard, nothing dramatic, but the approach from Holmfirth takes you through some lovely walking country where the horizon just keeps opening up.

You're looking at a straightforward moorland ramble rather than a scramble. The terrain is typical Pennine stuff: grass, peat, the odd rocky outcrop. Most walkers tackle it in an hour or so from the town, depending on your pace and whether you stop for the view. It's free, obviously - it's a hill - and there's no facility up top, so bring your own refreshment if you fancy a sit-down.

This isn't one for the kids if they need constant entertainment, but for anyone who enjoys proper walking without the crowds you get at honeypot peaks, it delivers. The moorland changes character with the seasons too. Summer green turns to purple heather in late August and September, which genuinely transforms the walk.

If you're based at one of the camping sites nearby - Whitegate Leisure or Thurlmoor Farm are closest at just a couple of miles out - this works well as a half-day outing. Pair it with a wander round Holmfirth itself, which has enough going on to justify the trip. The walk's accessible enough for most fitness levels, though the peat sections can be boggy after rain, so choose your day.
