The space focuses on modern work, which means it's not for everyone. If you're after traditional landscapes or historical pieces, you'll be disappointed. But if you like art that makes you think, or work from emerging artists, it's exactly the sort of place worth a detour during a park holiday in the area. The Lincoln waterfront's just there if you need something else to do.

What works well is the scale. There's none of that overwhelming museum feeling where you run out of steam before you've seen half of it. The staff know what they're talking about, and they won't ignore you the way gallery types sometimes do. It's free to get in, which is a bonus.

Stay at Hartsholme Country Park - it's walking distance - and you can spend a morning here, grab lunch, then head out to the cathedral or the high street without any bother. If you're bringing kids who aren't mad for art, they might get restless after twenty minutes. Teenagers who actually care about what they're looking at will find it interesting. Worth the stop if you're based at any of the sites nearby, less so if you're making a special journey.
