Deep Wood

The woodland around Grange-over-Sands has proper depth to it - and Deep Wood lives up to its name. You're walking into actual old-growth forest here, the kind where light filters through in broken shafts and the ground stays damp even in summer. It's the sort of place where you lose the caravan park noise within five minutes flat.

This works best for walkers who want something more atmospheric than a quick stroll. Families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground will get on fine, though it's not a destination playground. Bring decent boots - the paths can be boggy - and allow a good hour minimum if you want to properly explore rather than just dash through.

There's a real sense of being inland and away from the touristy bits of the Lake District here. You're close enough to Grange-over-Sands for provisions but far enough that it actually feels remote. The moss-covered trees and lack of obvious signposting mean it has genuine character rather than the polished feel of managed attractions.

If you're staying at Old Park Wood or High Haume, Deep Wood makes an excellent half-day outing - wet weather-proof too, since the canopy keeps the worst of the rain off. The contrast to open fell walking is exactly what you need when you've had enough of wind and exposure. Worth checking locally about current access since woodland can be unpredictable, but when it's open, it's genuinely worth your time.
